KATHMANDU: Trinity ‘B’ and ‘C’ along with Nobel ‘A’ entered the semi-finals of the third Nobel Cup Under-19 3x3 Basketball Tournament here on Thursday. In the day’s matches, Trinity ‘C’ defeated Navajeevan 21-17. Trinity ‘B’ beat Golden Gate ‘C’ 13-10. Nobel ‘A’ edged past National ‘B’ 16-13 and Golden Gate ‘A’ hammered National ‘A’ 21-7. In last four matches, Trinity ‘B’ will take on Golden Gate ‘A’, while Trinity ‘C’ will face Nobel ‘A’.
BernHardt TT tourney
KATHMANDU: The first BernHardt Inter-college Table Tennis is set to begin here on Friday. Around 100 students from 15 colleges from Kathmandu Valley will vie for four gold medals, said the organisers here on Thursday. The estimated cost of the three-day event is Rs 117,000. —
Morgan strike gold
KATHMANDU: Morgan College won the women’s team event gold medals of the third Morgan Cup Inter-college Table Tennis Tournament on Thursday. Morgan beat Prime 3-1 in final. Piyush Awal and Mani Kumar Lama set the boys’ singles title clash. Piyush defeated Anish Shrestha 3-1 and Mani Kumar saw off Ajesh Maharjan 3-0 in the semi-finals. Renuka Khatri overcame Erika Maharjan 3-1 in the girls’ singles semis. Entering the girls’ doubles final were Renuka Khatri/ Elina Maharjan and Sunita Lama/Erika. Likewise, Nihal Shrestha/Gaurav Ranjitkar and Ajesh/Bilosh Shrestha made it to the final of the boys’ doubles section.
21 get scholarships
KATHMANDU: Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA) has picked up 21 players from its Talent Hunt Programme. The selected players — 15 boys and six girls — received full scholarships in different colleges of Kathmandu. Among those picked up, five boys and two girls each were handed over the scholarships in Morgan College, Xavier International College and Premier College. A total of 150 players — 110 boys and 40 girls — had enrolled in the two-month Talent Hunt Programme.
SA to host CL T20
JOHANNESBURG: South Africa will host this year's Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament in October. Cricket South Africa says fixtures and venues will be announced later on Thursday but the fourth edition of the tournament will likely start on October 12. South Africa also hosted the event in 2010. Organisers said this month that the 10-team event would feature three sides from India and two each from Australia and South Africa. Domestic T20 winners from Sri Lanka, New Zealand, West Indies, Pakistan and England would play off in a qualifying series before the main tournament for the remaining three places.
Kemboi under probe
ELDORET: Kenyan 3,000 metres steeplechase world champion and London Olympic medal hopeful Ezekiel Kemboi is involved in a police investigation into a violent attack, senior officials said. Kemboi, who won Olympic gold in Athens in 2004 and won the World Championships titles in Berlin and Daegu in 2009 and 2011, qualified for the London Games last weekend. "Kemboi came to the station and recorded a statement that he was attacked by thugs, but we are investigating the matter," Isaac Musyoki, head of criminal investigations in Uasin Gishu county, said.
