KATHMANDU: Noted television news anchor and journalist Prabin Giri passed away on Sunday. He was 61. Giri, diagnosed with liver cancer, was admitted at Chabahil-based Om Hospital last week. Doctors pronounced him dead at 7:00 am. He was known for his unique voice. He served Nepal Television and other private televisions during a career spanning over 35 years. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Hashish seized

KATHMANDU: Police on Sunday raided a rented room in Manamaiju and arrested Suresh Lama (24) of Makwanpur with seven kg hashish. Detectives carried out a search in his room. Police said he was smuggling hashish to Kathmandu from his home district and peddling the narcotic drug in the Capital.

Gamblers arrested

KATHMANDU: Police raided a gambling den operated under the cloak of Jimi Guest House in Chabahil and rounded up five persons including Prabin Kumar Jimi, its owner, in the act of gambling on Saturday night. Police seized Rs 74,000 and gambling materials. — HNS

Man drowns

LALITPUR: Narayan Subedi (26) of Dang reportedly drowned in Chapagaun-based Mahadev Khola on Saturday. He was a domestic help. An eyewitness, he had collapsed while washing himself in the swollen brook. He was epileptic. The body has been sent to TU teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj for post-mortem. Police said investigation is under way.

One found dead

KATHMANDU: Santosh Das (20) of Saptari was found dead at his workplace in Anamnagar on Sunday. Police, together with local people had broken into his room after he failed to respond to repeated calls from outside. Officials said he was lying dead at 7:30 am. Police are investigating the cause of death

57 rounded up

KATHMANDU: Police on Saturday raided 14 hotels, guest houses and restaurants in Bag Bazaar, Sundhara, Ratopul, Kalanki, Balaju and Thamel leading to the arrest of 57 persons for their alleged involvement in immoral activities. Of them, 26 are women. Police claimed that most of them were caught in the act of indulging in illegal sex.
