KATHMANDU: Prime Minister and Patron of Nepal Amateur Veterans Athletics Committee‚ Madhav Kumar Nepal felicitated veteran athletes Kamal Thapa in tennis and Ram Krishna Maharjan in athletics at a function organised by the Committee here on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion‚ Prime Minister Nepal said the contribution of the veteran athletes would be important for encouraging the new generation athletes.
Referring to Nepal’s participation in the recently concluded 16th Asian Games in China‚ Prime Minister Nepal noted that the country had to face shameful defeat in the international tournament due to internal squabbling and dispute in the sports sector.
The Prime Minister also said that the government and non-government organizations should promote athletes by according sports high priority to enhance Nepal’s image at the international level.
Felicitated veteran athlete Kamal Thapa had come first in the All India Senior Tennis Championship (above 55 years) held in India while Ram Krishna Maharjan won the 16th Asian Masters’ Athletes Championship held in Malaysia.
Speaking on the occasion‚ Thapa‚ who is also president of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party‚ said he has been involved in the sports sector since the past four decades and would continue to do so as long as he is physically fit for it.
Chairperson of the Organising Committee‚ Gobardhan Nath Sharma said the National Sports Council has neglected the veteran athletes.
