BIRATNAGAR: Suraj Wasti (24) of Urlabari has been held captive in Biratnagar-based Neuro Hospital for not paying his hospital dues amounting to Rs 3.5 lakhs.
He was brought to the Neuro Hospital when he was hit by a van in Urlabari on February 11. According to his family, the hospital administration had asked them to clear his medical expenses and take him home 15 days ago.
“It has been difficult to pay the hospital dues as the vehicle that hit Suraj was not impounded,” Suraj’s brother, Prakash said, adding, “Otherwise the van owner would have paid it.”
The doctors, who treated Suraj, say he has not fully recovered, should rest at home and continue taking his medicines.
According to Prakash, the hospital bill had crossed Rs 5 lakhs of which Rs 3.5 lakhs are unpaid. “The hospital would not let Suraj go home without clearing the dues and we don’t know how long we are supposed to stay in the hospital?” he added. Suraj’s father Ram Prasad said, “I have already taken a loan of Rs 1.5 lakhs from relatives and organisations but where do I get the rest?”
An all-party meeting of District Administration Office, District Public Health Office and political parties has asked the hospital to wave of Suraj’s treatment charge.
Hospital Administration Chief Bipul Shrestha clarified that the hospital had already provided him a lot and could not treat him for free. He said Suraj could only be discharged after his family cleared all the dues.
