STUTTGART: German No 1 Andrea Petkovic will miss both the French Open and Wimbledon after tearing ankle ligaments less than a week after making her comeback from a back injury. The 24-year-old, ranked 12th, badly twisted her right ankle during her second-round tie against world No 1 Victoria Azarenka as she slid to reach a ball on Thursday night which left her in distress. Scans at hospital in Stuttgart on Friday revealed she has torn two ligaments, and damaged a third, in her right ankle and may need an operation. She will be out for around three months.
Spinks dies at 74
LONDON: Terry Spinks, who won an Olympic boxing gold medal for Britain at the 1956 Melbourne Games, has died after a long illness, it was confirmed on Friday. He was 74. Spinks, who was just 18 when he beat Romanian Mircea Dobrescu to strike gold, died at his home in Essex just outside London. After his Olympic success Spinks turned professional, winning 41 of 49 fights before retiring at the early age of 24. Spinks later coached South Korea’s boxing team at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
Lennon charged
GLASGOW: Celtic manager Neil Lennon was hit with fresh misconduct charges by the Scottish Football Association (SFA) on Thursday. The latest alleged offences concerning Lennon, halfway through serving a touchline ban for comments made after Celtic’s Scottish League Cup final defeat, relate to incidents after the Hoops’ Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Hearts. After the Hearts match, Lennon ran onto the Hampden Park pitch to confront referee Euan Norris over the penalty award.
Wolfsburg sign Olic
BERLIN: Croatia striker Ivica Olic will switch from Bayern Munich to German league rivals Wolfsburg next season having signed a two-year contract, he confirmed Thursday. The 32-year-old, who has spent three seasons in Munich, confirmed the news after flying back from Spain with Bayern after their Champions League semi-final victory over Real Madrid. “Ivica is an absolute professional,” said Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath, who coached Wolves to the 2009 German league title. Olic lost his place in Bayern’s first-team after a series of injuries and while he is set to star for Croatia at Euro 2012 in June.
