KATHMANDU: Security has been beefed up in the Paris Danda-based party headquarters of UCPN-Maoist after discharged combatants tried to stop Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal today.

Forty security personnel led by DSP Bir Bahadur Oli have been deployed in Paris Danda after the incident which took place when Dahal and Bhattarai were coming out of the party office after holding a meeting.

Police used ‘moderate’ force to disperse the agitating former combatants and cleared the way for the Prime Minister and Dahal. No one was injured in the incident, said police.

Disqualified combatants have been staging a sit-in before the party office for the past five days demanding perks and other benefits on par with those taking voluntary retirement.

Officials said security was upped in the area keeping in mind the frequent movement of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, Dahal and other leaders.

Three persons arrested for insurance fraud

KATHMANDU: When Dhan Bahadur Rai (44) and his wife Maya Rai (39) approached Metropolitan Police Circle Balaju to claim insurance money, they seemed to be a normal family “bereaved by the death of a family member in a road accident.”

But little did police officials know what the couple, along with their friend Mithu Bhandari (33), had up their sleeves.

Dhan Bahadur told police that it was his brother who had died after being hit by a tanker in Balaju on Saturday. He then filed an application to claim five lakh rupees, which a road accident victim’s kin are entitled to as per the third-party insurance scheme.

Police asked the trio to produce substantial evidence that the deceased, Mote Rai, was their kin by getting a letter from the VDC concerned to support their party insurance claim.

The trio, however, ended up in jail after their true story came surfaced. Suryamati VDC, where the Rais live, reported to police that the man who died in the Balaju accident was not their brother and their brother, also named Mote Rai, had died years ago. Following the revelation, police have arrested the three to press fraud charges.

Meanwhile, it has been learn that the man killed in the accident, in his 30s, was a porter, whose kin are yet to be found. “Mithu and the couple orchestrated the whole drama as no one claimed the body and the decreased’s fellow porters said they used to call him Mote Rai,” said DSP Krishna Bahadur Palli Magar of Balaju police.

Police said Mithu was the brains behind the whole episode. “We arrested the trio and charged them with fraud after VDC officials informed us about their foul play. The body has not been claimed yet,” DSP Magar .

The body has been kept at TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj. Police have already detained the tanker driver and impounded the vehicle.

Monitoring of market hits snag

Himalayan News Service

Kathmandu, April 19

Ensuring safe and nutritious food through market monitoring has become difficult for the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control due to inadequate workforce.

There are only 37 food supervisors under the department for a population of 26.6 million. The available workforce is 72 times lower than the global standard. “There ought to be one supervisor for every ten thousand population as per the global standard,” said the spokesperson at the department. The current human resource status indicates that one food supervisor has to work for about 7.2 lakh population.

Director General of the department Jivan Prabha Lama said that their demand for workforce has always been ignored. “Though there is talk of providing the required workforce at the Ministry of Finance and National Planning Commission, it ha never materialised,” lamented Lama at the second quarterly progress evaluation programme in the department today.

“Lack of vehicles for field monitoring as well as manpower crunch has slowed down work,” added Lama. The department has demanded 17 personnel to carry out its duties.
