DAMAK: Hundreds of families have been displaced from their homes in Jhapa, Kohabhara VDC, after the rain-swollen Ratuwa River entered human settlements inundating the houses and submerging the lands.

With the river changing its course and gushing into the human settlement in Balubathan, Khayarbari, Khadigaun, Chittigaun, Nayangaun, Magarkhadi, Singhdubba and Teliya Dangi villages have been submerged in water, forcing about 700 families to displace.

According to Chhatrapati Subedi, chairperson of Ratuwa Mawa Embankment Irrigation Management Committee, the whole village in the VDC is immersed in water except for two wards.

Meanwhile, the flood-displaced people are moving to safer places. Bishnu Prasad Tajpuriya of Kohabhara Ward No-3 Nayangaun said: “We have no option but to take to the road after our houses and land were submerged in flood waters.”

About 40 families are forced to spend their night under temporary shelters on the road.
