Second successive win for Birgunj; Kathmandu stay alive

LALITPUR: Region-II (Birgunj) registered their second consecutive victory, while Region-III (Kathmandu) kept their final hopes alive with a slim six-run win over Region-I (Biratnagar) in the Wai Wai U-19 National Cricket Tournament today.
Birgunj lead Group ‘B’ with four points from two matches, while Biratnagar and Kathmandu stay in hunt for a final place with two points each. Region-VIII (Pokhara) are knocked out after losing to Birgunj by 83 runs at the TU Stadium in a low scoring match.
Birgunj were dismissed for 133 in 23.1 overs but defended the total by restricting Pokhara for 50 in 24.2 overs. Man-of-the-match Bibek Dali picked up four and Akib Ansari three wickets for Birgunj. Only Sagar Bhattarai (12) and Anil Gurung (10) made significant runs for Pokhara.
Earlier, openers Hashim Ansari and Bijay Ghalan (seven) gave a positive start to Birgunj with a 60-run stand for the first wicket but once the latter was dismissed in the eighth over by Padam Ghalan, they lost their momentum.
Sunil Kadel (5-22) claimed next four wickets, starting with a prized-scalp of Hashim to demolish Birgunj middle order. Hashim hammered 48 runs in 29 balls with eight fours. Govinda Pradhan also took four wickets for Pokhara. Shiva Tandukar was Birgunj’s next best contributor with 28 runs.
In Pulchowk, Kathmandu made 137 in 40.2 overs and restricted Biratnagar to 131 in 40.4 overs. After a 27-run first-wicket stand between Suman Shrestha (15) and Amal Das (11), Biratnagar lost their way losing wickets in regular intervals. Only Siddhant Lohani (23) led a brief resistance. Ujjwal Thapa took three while Prajesh Bahadur Singh, Bijay Gautam and Sharad Khadka bagged two wickets each for Kathmandu .
Biratnagar, earlier, reduced Kathmandu to 59-4 but Indra Kamal Manandhar and Bijay (16) rescued the team with a 53-run stand for the fifth wicket. Indra made 42 while Sharad chipped in 21 runs.
Kishore Chaudhary took four wickets for Biratnagar while Hari Chaulagain, Amit Dahal and Siddhant Lohani had two scalps each. On Tuesday, Birgunj play Biratnagar in Kirtipur and Kathmandu take on Pokhara in Pulchowk.
