60 players from Nepal‚ India‚ Afghanistan‚ Sri Lanka‚ Pakistan and Bangladesh will compete for 135 medals under both the women's and men's categories

NEPALGUNJ: At the initiative of Nepal Weightlifting Association, the First South Asian Weightlifting Competition is taking place in Nepalgunj from Thursday.

According to Association Central General Secretary Partha Sarathi Sen, 60 players from Nepal, India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh will compete for 135 medals under both the women's and men's categories.

Bhutan and the Maldives are not participating in the competition.

All preparations for the competition have been completed, said the Association. The tournament is expected to cost around Rs. 3 million.

China and Hungary are to support the Association to conduct the competition. China is to assist in information technology while Hungary for the doping-test.

Similarly, a SAARC-level conference of the weightlifting associations is to be organised here tomorrow, said Association Central Chairman Ratan Tandan.

Minister for Youth and Sports Kamala Rokka is scheduled to inaugurate the competition amidst a programme at the covered hall of the Mahendra Stadium at 3:00 pm on Thursday, it is learnt.
