KATHMANDU: The scene was tense early Tuesday as a crowd of hundreds of squatters clashed with the police personnel who were deployed for a demolition drive in Thapathali area.

Squatters who live beside the Thapathali hospital believed their shanties were to be destroyed and blocked the police by pelting stones at them.

Dozens from both the sides have been injured in the clash.

The violence emerged when the informal settlers threw bottles, stones, and words against anti-squatters plans and policies, at police who responded with tear gas.

Over a dozen of protesters are under the police net following the scuffle.

Today’s demolition drive is run up to government’s decision to expel squatters from their place of abode and introduce an alternate settlement along with a property ownership document.
