The evils of dowry system

This is in reference to your news item,” Man tries to burn wife, in laws.” (THT, April 24, Page 6). It is really disgusting that the dowry system is still prevalent in our society, creating misunderstanding between couples. Even though dowry system is prohibited by the law, it is very discouraging that it is still followed in our society. It has been observed that if a husband is not satisfied by the dowry amount and other things as per his or his parents demand, the wife is tortured to the extreme, and sometimes she is murdered in cold blood. The government must take this seriously, and the police should be alert in this regard, especially in the Terai region. The guilty must receive the most severe punishment so that others are discouraged from comitting such crimes as well.

college, their responsibility is not only to succeed academically, but also to grow up as responsible human beings. To help them grow, active participation in extra-curricular activities is a must. Organizing different events like blood-donation drives, health awareness

campaigns and fund-raisers to help people in need, turn them into responsible citizens of our country. Students who actively participate in these activities without hampering their studies develop very good leadership and time-management skills. These skills will later help them achieve their goals in life, as when they graduate, they will know how to manage their time to master their life.Darshan Neupane,

This is with reference to the news report “Decision on 38 new municipalities soon” (THT, April 25, Page 6) about the

government decision to declare new municipalities. When I heard about this government decision, I was happy as well at other people. This way our country will be able to collect more taxes, which can be utilised for development purposes, besides making investments on hydro-power, agriculture and other sectors. That will have a favourable impact on increasing our per capita income and generating employment opportunities. But, a year back the government had declared many new municipalities, but that has not been implemented, yet it is thinking of declaring 38 more municipalities. Just declaring new municipalities is not enough, it has also to be seen how they can be sustainable to develop the municipality infrastructure. If the government is only thinking of increasing its revenue through the various taxes it is not good. The taxes that are raised have to be put to good use and they must benefit the taxpayers. Only when the people of the municipality benefit, they will be enthusiastic about paying the taxes.
