Top leaders "agree to seal consensus in package deal"

"The meeting was the most positive one since the demise of Constituent"

KATHMANDU: Three major parties--UCPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML--on Monday evening agreed upon making a package deal on the issues related to new constitution along with the prime ministerial candidate for unity government.

Taking into consideration the extended deadline offered by the President to forge a national consensus government, the top leaders of the parties held a meeting at the Chabahil-based Indreni Hotel this evening.

“Meeting decided to forge consensus on all the issues through a package deal,” said UCPN-Maoist leader Amik Sherchan, emerging from the meeting.

The leaders also decided to sit again on Tuesday to seek a consensus. “We will sit again on Tuesday afternoon after intra-party discussions,” added Sherchan.

Participants of the meeting claimed that the parties have inched closer to the consensus.

“The meeting was the most positive one since the demise of Constituent. Let's hope that we will be able to strike a deal within the extended deadline of December 6”, said NC leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula.

Earlier today, UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, also one the vice chairmen of the Maoist party, called on NC President Sushil Koirala, with a proposal seeking the NC support to form national unity government in Dr. Bhattarai's leadership.

The NC, however, has shown unwillingness to accept Dr. Bhattarai's continuation as the prime minister of the unity government.
