KATHMANDU: Transportation Engineer Ashish Gajurel today initiated Traffic Safety Awareness Campaign 2012 targeting school students by demonstrating basic traffic safety measures at Shankhamul-based Gyan Niketan Higher Secondary School.
Gajurel, who is a postgraduate in MSc in transportation engineering from Germany, made a presentation on pedestrian safety, zebra crossings, overhead bridges, traffic lights and use of footpaths to hundreds of students.
“The purpose behind the campaign is to educate children about the benefits of following traffic rules and regulations,” Gajurel said.
Gajurel wants to cover all the schools in the Valley in future.
Several fatal accidents in our city can be prevented by following traffic rules, he said. He reinforced the need of traffic education from primary level as is done in Holland.

I really hope that Mr Gajurel is teaching the kids that walking on the RIGHT side, is safer than walking on the left side of the road. You will then meet the traffic that is nearest to you, the driver will be able to see if you have noticed him/her and you will be able to judge whether it's neccessary to "get out of the way". It will also give less noisy traffic as there will be less need for the drivers to use the horn! Good for everyone! Ragnhild, Patan
