DAMAK:CPN-UML Chairperson Jhala Nath Khanal today said if the Nepali Congress fails to choose a consensus prime ministerial candidate then his party will stake a claim to lead the government.
Speaking at a press meet organised by the Press Chautari in Damak, Jhapa, he said we are prepared to give the responsibility to the Nepali Congress to lead the government, but the party itself has not been able to put forward a name for the PM post.
“There are many competent leaders in our party for the post,” he said, adding, “We do not have any problem to choose a PM candidate in the event NC fails to pick one.” Khanal blamed the Unified CPN-Maoist for dissolving the Constituent Assembly without foreseeing the imminent dangers that the country would be facing.
Coming down heavily on the UCPN-M, he said the exit of incumbent Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai is the only bottom line of the opposition parties.
On consensus, Khanal said there is no alternative to it in the present circumstances, adding, “We have been trying our level best for the same.” He even said the UML would emerge as the largest party in the upcoming elections.
The former CA chairperson Subas Nembang, on his part, said we can give a way out to the country by amending the statute as per the political consensus. He said, “In such a condition when there is no Parliament in the state the statute can be amended to fulfill the vacant constitutional bodies, but even for that reaching a political consensus is a must.”
He said the vacant posts in the Supreme Court and Election Commission would invite additional crisis. Telling that consensus was the only alternative, he claimed that all solutions to the problems facing the nation would be solved once elections are held on time.
‘Election under NC leadership’
SALYAN: CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwor Pokharel today said the upcoming election government should be formed under the leadership of the Nepali Congress. Inaugurating the UML Salyan’s Seventh District Conference here today, Pokharel said the present deadlock facing the country could only be resolved if the parties honour the May-3 deal and are ready to form the election government under the NC’s leadership. “The Unified CPN-Maoist is, in fact, trying to protract the present crisis by ignoring to follow the deal,” he said, suggesting the Maoist party to accept NC’s leadership for the upcoming election as per the past deal. Further, stating his party was ready to make any
sacrifice for consensus, he, however, ruled out the possibility of a consensus government under the leadership of incumbent Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai. “Bhattarai cannot stay in power as he has lost legitimacy. As the present government
has acted against the nation, how can it be accepted as a
consensus government,” he said. On a different note, Pokharel termed President
Ram Baran Yadav’s call for a consensus government as ‘constitutional’.
