UN chief lauds parties' role in peace process

KATHMANDU: United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has lauded the efforts made by political parties in finalizing the disputed issues attached to the integration of Maoist fighter into the Nepal Army.

"The Secretary-General commends the progress on integration and rehabilitation of Maoist combatants and hopes for a smooth completion of the process," said a statement issued by Ban's spokesperson.

Ban acknowledged the role of the political parties, Nepalese government and Nepal Army, and Maoist commanders and combatants in resolving the intricacies of the integration.

Reaffirming the continued support of the United Nations to Nepal's peace process, the UN chief urged the political parties to work as per the consensus to logically end the peace process and promulgate a new constitution, which actually reflects the aspirations of all Nepali people.

Ban also called on political actors to ensure the transitional justice mechanisms and address the victims’ plights.
