POCHEON: The United States and South Korea are holding massive live-fire drills meant as a warning against North Korean aggression.

Friday's one-day drills south of the heavily armed Korean border involve fighter jets, attack helicopters, armored vehicles and 2,000 allied troops.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said in a statement that the drills are to deter a North Korean attack. Pyongyang calls the exercises preparation for war.

Monday is the 62nd anniversary of the start of the Korean War. The three-year conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

Tension is high after a North Korean rocket launch in April. Pyongyang has also threatened to attack South Korea's government and media for perceived insults.
