KATHMANDU: Workers forcefully terminated by Nepal Satellite Telecom — Hello Nepal — have given a seven-day ultimatum to reinstate them. A group of 40 workers, led by Birodh Kattel, handed over the ultimatum to the manager of the company.
“We handed over our demands and staged a protest in front of Mukti Tower — the company building,” said coordinator of All Nepal Printing Press and Publications’ Workers Organisation, a sister organisation of CPN-Maoist (led by Vaidhya) Janmadev Jaisi. According to him, the telco expelled about two dozen workers without following the labour laws of the country.
“We want immediate reinstatement of the workers. If they are not reinstated we will take strong action from the eighth day,” he said, adding that his party will not tolerate any exploitation of workers.
However, the company has rejected the workers’ claims and have said that it is just a propaganda stunt. “There is no labour issue. All workers had resigned on their own will after a golden handshake,” said a top officer at Hello Nepal.
According to him, the workers had received handsome amounts ranging from between Rs 100,000 to Rs 3.1 million four months back when TeliaSonera had shown an interest in buying the company. Currently, TeliaSonera operates the company.
