KATHMANDU: Yuvraj Gurung won the title of the Malaysia Merdeka Cup Golf Tournament here at the Royal Nepal Golf Club today.
Played under stableford 3/4 handicap format, Yuvraj accumulated 36 points to lift the trophy and Kathmandu-Kuala Lumpur-Kathmandu air tickets from Malaysia Airlines.
Samir Acharya finished second on count back with 34 points, while Prem Pravat Gurung came third, also on count back with 33 points. Maj Man Bahadur Limbu, who had scored 34 points to take lead on the first day, won the best gross award with 28 points.
Rekha Ghimire bagged the women’s section trophy with 26 points, while Sandhya Rai (25) and Pawitra Yakthumba (24) came second and third respectively. In senior section, Suman Limbu won the title with 31 points, while Maj Mani Prasad Rai came second on count back after he was tied with Lt Gen KNS Thapa on 29 points.
Jung Chul Pyo came first among diplomats with 33 points, whereas Maj Narendra K Rai won the super senior section title with 30 points. Likewise, Sonam Ongdi Lama finished first in junior section, ahead of Aditi Ghimire.
Rabin Raj Bijayananda won the most birdies award with two birdies, while Dinesh Karki bagged the longest drive and Deepak Rajbhandary won the closest to the pin awards. Rabi Paudel was awarded with the best sportsmanship trophy.
A total of 76 players took part in the two-day event sponsored by Malaysian Embassy under the auspices of Malaysia Airlines. Counsellor/Charge d’Affairs a.i. of Malaysian Embassy to Nepal Fadli Adilah, Finland Ambassador Asko Luukkaninen, Egypt Ambassador Dr Moustafa Gandy, Managing Director of President Travels and Tours Bhola Bikram Thapa and RNGC President Prachanda Bahadur Shrestha gave away the prizes to the winners.
