15-year-old falls off moving tanker, driver nabbed

KATHMANDU: A special police team deployed from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division on Saturday arrested an absconding water tanker driver in connection to death of a 15-year-old boy in Gokarneshwor of Kathmandu.

Police arrested Bijaya Kumar Sunuwar (19) of Priti-3 in Ramechhap district, currently employed as a driver of the water tanker (Ba 1 Kha 9788).

Earlier, a teen, who was later identified as Ujwal Rai (15) from Bajho village of Ilam, was found dead in the pool of blood with serious head injuries near the Mulpani Cricket Ground in Gokarneshwor-9 of Kathmandu in the wee hours of June 9.

He was currently residing at Besigaun of Gokarneshwor Municipality-9 in Kathmandu district. He was a sixth grader at Chamunda Higher Secondary School in Narayantar, added police.

Sunuwar told police that Rai among 12 local youth was invited by the driver's assistant Raj Kumar Lama. Then, all the youth had boozed together before they began their journey on the roof of the tanker, driven by almost equally drunk driver.

After a while, Rai had suddenly fallen off the moving tanker and died a moment later.

Earlier, Sunuwar was returning to Jorpati after delivering water at Ombahal-based Hotel Eden at around 11 pm on June 8. He had stopped at a Mulpani-based open ground to spend some good times with his assistant Lama. But, Lama had also managed to call Rai among 12 for drinking.

The driver, his assistant and all witnesses were absconding after the incident.

Police said they are investigating into the case.
