2 held for smuggling wild animals and birds

KATHMANDU: Police on Sunday said two persons including an Indian national were arrested on charge of smuggling protected wild animals and birds from Chamati in KMC-15 on Sunday.

In a statement today, Metropolitan Crime Division said 52-year-old Amin Alam of Bidur Municipality-11 in Nuwakot district and 26-year-old Mohammad Raju of Sitamadi district in Bihar State of India were apprehended today.

Acting on a tip-off, a sleuth from MCD seized 70 Munia birds, 2 white panda, 4 Porcupine (Dumsi in Nepali) 27 sets of empty animal nets, operated on the fourth floor of a rented building in Chamati, it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, police have sent the suspects to the Kathmandu District Forest Office in Hattishar, for further investigation and action today itself, reads the statement.

It has been learned that the duo were operating illegal trading of wild animals and birds for some time in Kathmandu.
