Absconding fraud convict arrested after two years

KATHMANDU: An absconding fraud convict who had been on the run for the last two years has finally been arrested from Kathmandu on Monday, Metropolitan Crime Division said.

Issuing a press statement on June 5, MCD said, a police team deployed from the Division arrested Rajendra Prasad Luitel (30) of Chatre Deurali in Dhading district, currently residing in Thankot of Chandragiri Municipality, from Kalanki of KMC-13 yesterday.

Earlier, Luitel introduced himself as a Loan Officer working at the Head Office of Rastriya Banijya Bank in Singha Durbar to his gullible target Krishna Prasad Bhattarai who hails from Morang district.

He assured Bhattarai of sanctioning a loan amount of Rs 10 million by keeping his plot in Morang as a collateral in the bank before collecting Rs 458,000 from the target.

Later, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai realised that he has been duped by Luitel which prompted him to file an FIR (First Information Report) at the police station.

On May 23, 2016, the Kathmandu District Court had convicted Luitel in the fraud case. He was slapped with one year in prison and a fine of Rs 4,58,000. However, he escaped the police following the conviction and had been on the run till his recent arrest.

Meanwhile, Luitel was presented before the court today.
