ADBL Lahan branch staffer held for colluding with hackers

Police have arrested one of the employees of Agricultural Development Bank Limited for his alleged involvement in the robbery of over Rs 47.3 million from the bank, a week ago.

The arrested has been identified as, gazetted third class officer Sunil Kumar Shah of ADBL’s Lahan Branch. Shah was summoned in the capital by the ADBL central office for internal investigation about the case, on September 26.

The bank had said it would investigate its staffers on its own, since the hackers stealing money from the bank had used genuine user IDs and passwords.

Police have arrested 16 persons in connection with the heist.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sahakul Bahadur Thapa of Metropolitan Police Range, Teku said, “We have taken Shah under control with suspicion that he was helping key persons behind the robbery.” Bhim Lal Poudel, spokesperson of ADBL confirmed Shah’s arrest by the police in connection with the robbery.

Police on September 25, in a press meet had claimed to have foiled a grand plan of hackers who were planning to rob of Rs 5 billion from the bank.

A foreigner called ‘Peter’ had masterminded to illegally transfer over Rs 47.3 million from Lahan based ADBL bank to different 12 accounts of its branches across the country. Those accounts were opened by Peter’s accomplices. Peter, the mastermind of the scam is still at large.
