Additional CCTVs being installed

Kathmandu, July 25

The Metropolitan Police Office said it had brought over 300 busy and sensitive locations of Kathmandu Valley under comprehensive CCTV coverage and installation of surveillance cameras was under way in additional 100 places.

According to acting police commissioner DIG Bam Bahadur Bhandari, this is part of the MPO’s campaign to make the Valley a safer place to live in.

The MPO enjoys jurisdiction over all police components located in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts. Police said CCTV camera is one of the most effective tools to deter crimes and solve them, and has become an essential part of security system in today’s world.

Police have been keeping a close surveillance on public activities and vehicular movement in over 300 sensitive locations of the Valley from the control room at MPO.

The advanced CCTV cameras have night-vision capabilities. “CCTV camera acts as a third eye for law enforcement officers in areas where manual policing is not possible all the time to deter criminals from committing offences and make the public feel safer,” he said.

Four major transits of the Valley — Jagate, Nanglebhare, Tinpiple and Pharping — have already been equipped with CCTVs.
