‘Address demands of temporary teachers’

Kathmandu, August 30

Stakeholders today reiterated that the demands of temporary teachers should be fulfilled as soon as possible.

Speaking at a programme organised here today, Nepali Congress leader Ram Krishna Yadav, who is also a lawmaker, said the demands of temporary teachers should be fulfilled. He said his party also held an extensive discussion on the genuine demands of temporary teachers. “

Despite all the political changes in the country, the problems of temporary teachers still remain. But our party will take the initiative to resolve them,” he said.

Lal Bahadur BC, president of All Nepal Teachers Organisation, said his organisation was serious regarding the demands of temporary teachers. He said, “All temporary teachers should be given permanent status through internal competition.”

Baburam Thapa, president of Nepal National Teachers Association, said agreements signed with the teachers in the past should be implemented.

Nirendra Kunwar, president of Temporary Teachers Struggle Central Committee, said temporary teachers who’ve worked for at least six years on temporary basis should be given the opportunity to fight for permanent status.

“There should be internal competition between all temporary teachers, lien teachers, project teachers and other teachers, who have worked for at least six years on temporary basis.”

He further said that those who don’t pass the internal competition be provided with gratuity and medical benefits as per the report prepared by the committee formed by then education minister in 2004.

The eighth amendment to the Education Act has the provision of internal competition for temporary teachers, but there is no provision of gratuity and medical benefits for teachers who fail internal competition.
