CA meet passes condolence motion on demise of Padma Sundar Lawati, next meeting on Tuesday afternoon

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the Constituent Assembly (CA) has passed a condolence motion on the demise of former lawmaker Padma Sundar Lawati today.

The CA meeting presided over by its Chairperson had commenced at 12:45 am on Tuesday.

Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N) leader Lawati had served as the ministers at different times before and after the restoration of the multi-party democracy in 1990 AD.

He had passed away while receiving treatment at Thapathali-based Norvic Hospital on June 10 at the age of 76. He had been suffering from multiple complications including heart disease. He represented electoral constituency no 2 of Panchthar district in the parliament.

The CA meeting has been postponed till 14:00 pm on June 30.

Even though the Constitution Drafting Committee was supposed to present a preliminary draft of the constitution before the full house of CA on Monday, it was not possible as three major political parties failed to finalise it. The Nepali Congress, CPN (UML) and UCPN (Maoist) have expressed disagreements regarding the terminologies and language of the draft.

Mainly parties have differing views on pluralism, dissolution of provincial assembly, local election, family property, inclusion of Army Chief in Security Council, electoral threshold and the structure of district.

The dispute of whether to continue or re-appoint the officials of the constitutional bodies after the promulgation of the new constitution has also been an obstacle to giving final shape to the constitution's draft.

The Draft Taskforce comprises Chairman Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Nepali Congress's Ramesh Lekhak, UML's Bhim Bahadur Rawal and Agni Prasad Kharel and UCPN (Maoist) Girirajmani Pokharel and Ram Narayan Bindari.

The CA meeting called at 3 pm on Monday was repeatedly postponed and sat only at 12:45 am on Tuesday.

After the Draft Committee could not give final shape to the constitution's preliminary draft the CA meeting was adjourned following the endorsement of a condolence motion.
