Campaign against GBV beginning today

The annual 16-day activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, which aims to raise awareness against kinds of violence against women, is beginning from tomorrow .

On the occasion, the National Women’s Commission is set to launch special programmes focusing schools this year.

Every year, the 16-day campaign begins from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on 10 December, the Human Rights Day.

NWC will organise various programmes in schools to raise awareness against gender-based violence.

Organising a press meet here today, Manu Humagain, acting president, NWC today said the commission would work towards ensuring participation of children in the 16-day campaign this year.

She said NWC would hold interactions with school children in various districts such as Jhapa, Chitwan, Rupendehi, Nepalgunj and Kanchanpur. Forty government and non-government organisations, working for the welfare of women and children, will participate in the campaign.

The 16-day activism will begin from 7:30 am tomorrow from Bhrikutimanda in Kathmandu.

According to Humagain, various awareness raising programmes will be organised during the campaign. The international slogan for this year’s campaign is ‘From peace in the home to peace in the world: Make education safe for all.’

Similarly, NWC today expressed concern about violence against women and children in the ongoing Tarai/Madhes agitation.Recently, protesters attacked an ambulance and trucks carrying medicines. A three-month old baby died after an ambulance was barred from taking her to the hospital.

A girl sustained injuries when police opened fire a few days ago.
