Kathmandu, April 22

As many as eight CCTV cameras with night-vision feature have been installed in Gongabu area to keep strict vigil against illegal activities.

DIG Bam Bahadur Bhandari of the Metropolitan Police Office today inaugurated the surveillance cameras supported by the local social and business organisations after the one of the busiest areas of Kathmandu recorded increasing crimes in recent months.

Speaking at the function, DIG Bhandari said it was a fine example of public-police partnership in the fight against crime.

Busy and sensitive areas in Kathmandu Valley are being brought under the CCTV coverage to give people a sense of security, he informed. According to MPO, this is also part of ‘technology based policing’. The MPO enjoys jurisdiction over all police components located in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts.

Currently, security officials have been keeping a close surveillance on public activities and vehicular movement in highly sensitive locations of the Valley from the control room of the MPO through 250 CCTVs. CCTV cameras have been acting as a third eye for law enforcement officers in areas where manual policing is not possible all the time.

According to the MPO, digital checkpoints have been placed in four transit points of the Valley with the aim of bolstering surveillance system.
