Clarification sought from hospitals

Kathmandu, December 13

Department of Supply Management and Protection of Consumers’ Interest yesterday asked Gwarko-based B&B Hospital and Dhapasi-based Grande International Hospital to furnish clarification within three days after the hospitals were found ‘overcharging’ patients.

“If the hospitals do not furnish clarification by tomorrow, we will take legal action against them,” said Director General at the department Kumar Prasad Dahal.

“We paid an inspection visit after we received complaints. The hospitals were found charging 10 per cent extra fee for beds and 13 per cent VAT, among other things,” added Dahal. The government allows hospitals to charge patients only five per cent as health services fee.  “B&B was also found operating 25 more beds. Ten per cent of beds should be allocated for the poor people, but the hospital wasn’t found doing so,” he said.
