Constitution is disabled-friendly, says PM

KATHMANDU:  Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has claimed that the country had got the disabled-friendly Constitution.

Prime Minister Dahal said so while addressing a function jointly hosted by different organisations on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, at Baluwatar in Kathmandu on Friday.

In the programme, physically-challenged people had drawn attention of the PM to ensuring their rights, comfortable living, disabled-friendly physical infrastructures and employment.

"Though our Constitution is not perfect for ensuring rights and comfortable lifestyle for people with disabilities, it is disabled-friendly. Many other rights will be achieved from its successful implementation," said Dahal.

The Constitution had ensured participation of people with disabilities in the National Assembly, said the CPN Maoist Centre Chairman, adding that there were, however, challenges ahead in effective implementation of the Constitution and formulation of necessary laws.

Saying that people with disabilities were receiving very less allowance, Dahal assured that he would make efforts to increase it.  He further expressed his commitment to make efforts to provide pensions to the government employees with disabilities, who were unable to work due to their health condition.

In a different context, PM Dahal said that the priority of government was to implement the Constitution by holding elections, adding that there would soon be an agreement among major political parties for the same.
