Defence Minister Rawal warns of army mobilisation to contain protests

KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Bhim Bahadur Rawal on Saturday warned that the government would mobilise army to contain the ongoing protests in Tarai, if need be.

Speaking with journalists at the Reporters' Club in Kathmandu today, the DPM said the government would leave no stone unturned to protect the nation, its territory and people.

"If necessary, all security agencies can be mobilised for protection of the people and the land," he said.

"The government is much restrained now," he warned, "(But) the government would take appropriate decision as per the necessity."

Meanwhile, Rawal informed that the government was continuing talks with India to mend soured ties with the southern neighbour."

He also urged protesting Madhes-centric parties to change the form of their agitation if they wanted the resolution through talks.

The Minister, also a CPN-UML Vice-Chairman, assured that the government would advance the Constitution Amendment Bill to address demands of the protesting parties once they agreed for the same.
