Deputy Speaker Race: NC's Bhusal Vs UML's Tumbahangphe

KATHMANDU: Nepal Congress lawmaker Pushpa Bhusal will contest the election for Deputy Speaker against CPN-UML candidate Shivamaya Tumbahangphe.

The election for the Deputy Speaker has been scheduled for 1:00 pm today.

Bhusal and Tumbahangphe filed their nominations on Thursday at Federal Parliament premises. Devendra Raj Kandel proposed Bhusal's candidacy while Dila Sangraula seconded it.

Likewise, Dev Gurung proposed Tumbahanghphe's candidacy which was seconded by Rabindra Adhikari.

Meanwhile, Tumbahangphe's candidacy has been posed with some constitutional questions at the moment.

With the left alliance candidate Tumbahangphe almost certain to win the election given the alliance’s majority in the House of Representatives and CPN-Maoist Centre’s Krishna Bahadur Mahara already elected to the post of speaker, legal eagles say it will be a breach of constitutional provision if the two parties eventually unify as per their plan.

Article 91 (2) of the constitution states that election for speaker and deputy speaker shall be so held that one of them is a woman and both are from different parties.
