Earthquake tremor felt in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU:  People in Kathmandu felt an earthquake tremor at 9:52 am today.

USGS reported 4.7 magnitude earthquake with its epicentre in Dhading at coordinates (27.850°N 84.819°E ), 42 kilometres ENE of Bharatpur at the depth of 35 kilometres.

According to USGC, seismicity in the Himalayan region dominantly results from the continental collision of the India and Eurasia plates, which are converging at a relative rate of 40-50 mm/yr.

Northward underthrusting of India beneath Eurasia generates numerous earthquakes and consequently makes this area one of the most seismically hazardous regions on Earth.
