Election Commission seeks law on political parties pronto

KATHMANDU: The Election Commission decided to write to the government to provide it with the law related to political parties as it was a must to expedite preparations for upcoming local level elections.

The constitutional body decided that it would write to the Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate the endorsement of the Bill on Political Parties from the Parliament.

A meeting of the Commission held on Tuesday decided to make the request, the EC spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma informed in a statement today.

He said the law must be enacted to carry out registration and management of political parties in the local elections.

The Bill has been stuck at the Parliament's State Affairs Committee as the parties could not find any meeting point about whether to impose a minimum threshold (and if yes, how much) in the proportional representation election system.

While the big parties want to impose the threshold, the fringe parties have been opposing the idea.

Meanwhile, the Commission also demanded that the government finalise the Local Bodies Restructuring Commission report and send it to the constitutional poll body as soon as possible.

The government on Monday had decided to hold the local level elections on May 14.
