Government declares late Lamu Amatya Nepal’s first nurse

Kathmandu, April 30

The government has declared late Lamu Amatya as the country’s first nurse.

At a programme organised by the ministry, Minister for Health Gagan Kumar Thapa declared Amatya as the country’s first nurse on the basis of evidences and handed over an official certificate to late Lamu’s son Yogeshwor Amatya.

Late Amatya had earned a nursing degree from Kolkata Medical College in 1954 AD.

In Nepal, she started her career from Nursing Training Project under the Ministry of Health from 13 March 1956.

So far, there was confusion over the country’s first nurse. The family of Umadevi Das had also made their claims, declaring Das as the country’s first nurse. Under Secretary at the ministry Ramkrishna Lamichhane said Lamu was declared the first nurse on the basis of available evidences. Lamu was born in Darjeeling, India, on January 27, 1932, and passed away some five years ago.
