Govt, UDMF to resume talks one week after Birgunj fiasco

KATHMANDU: The government and the agitating United Democratic Madhesi Front are all scheduled to resume dialogue, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa.

Deputy Prime Minister Thapa, who heads the government talks team, posted on Twitter this evening that the talks team of both the sides would be formal meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Minister at 1 pm on Monday.

Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister Thapa had written that the November 2 Birgunj incident was sad and the government and the agitating parties would hold formal talks very soon as both the sides wanted to resolve the crisis through dialogue.

A youth, who was later identified as an Indian national, was killed in police firing in a a violent protest in Birgunj on November 2 after the security personnel removed the agitators from the Nepal-India border in order to send back the Indian cargo vehicles to India.

In response, the agitating UDMF parties had protested the police action saying there was no meaning of holding dialogue with the government then.

The four Madhesi parties are constituents of UDMF returned to the Legislature-Parliament. Demanding that their demands be met, they, however, obstructed the House business.

The House is scheduled to meet at 3 pm tomorrow.
