Families of those killed in Tarai, Tharuhat protests to get Rs 1mln each
KATHMANDU: The government on Friday decided to provide Rs 1 million each to the families of those killed during last year's protests in Tarai-Madhes region and Tharuhat within a week, and bear the expenses for treatment of the injured.
A Cabinet meeting held on Friday morning took the decision in line with the three-point agreement that the Maoist-Nepali Congress alliance forged with the Madhesi parties prior to the prime ministerial election on August 3.
Prior to the Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had held a tripartite meeting with the Madhesi leaders and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.
Similarly, the Cabinet decided to release those arrested during the protests.
Also, the government decided to form a commission to look into the incidents of arson and vandalism.
The Ministry of Home Affairs would initiate the process within a week to form the commission and make recommendation to the Cabinet, according to Deputy Prime Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara.
