Hospital generates income from waste

Kathmandu, July 25

Paropakar Maternity and Women’s Hospital has been earning Rs 30,000 per month from waste generated in the hospital. The hospital generates 300 kg waste every day.

“Waste produced in the hospital is mostly harmful and can create infection among people. So before selling waste materials to scrap dealers we disinfect them,” said Bhawani Khadka. There are six staffers in the hospital whose job is to segregate contaminated and non-contaminated waste.

The contaminated waste is then disinfected before being sold to scrap dealers. “Earlier, we had a contract with Kathmandu Metropolitan City for waste disposal and we paid money for that, but the situation has changed now.”

According to Khadka, the hospital used to pay Rs 2,700 per month to KMC for waste disposal. However, the hospital has now been generating income from waste.

The quantity of waste generated in the hospital depends on the number of patients. Now, we are also planning to generate bio-gas in the hospital by using waste as soon as possible, she informed.
