House panel calls to address Dr Govinda KC's demands pronto

KATHMANDU: The Social Justice and Human Rights Committee of the Parliament on Monday has directed the government to implement past agreement signed between the government and Dr Govinda KC, who is on his fast-unto-death demanding  reforms in Nepal's medical sector.

Citing deteriorating health condition of the fasting doctor, the Committee also drew attention of the government to immediately address the four-point demand put forth by Dr KC and save his life.

A Committee team led by its Chairperson Sushil Kumar Shrestha had met Dr KC at his strike site in Maharajgunj.

Dr KC's demands include improvements in a draft of the Medical Education Act, implementation of the report of Mathema Commission and effective implementation of the past agreements signed with him earlier.

"I had already warned him before he begun the hunger strike that he would be betrayed and now, the same thing happened" said Shreshta after the meeting, adding, "Doctor KC made me clear that he would not end the hunger strike until the demands get addressed."

Meanwhile, doctors involved in the treatment of Dr KC, who has been staging hunger strike from July 10 at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, informed that his health was deteriorating.
