Hundreds affected as swollen Bagmati gushes into slums

KATHMANDU: Swollen Bagmati River wreaked havoc on the settlements of landless squatters in several places in the Kathmandu Valley after torrential rainfall on Monday night.

Hundreds of people have been directly affected by the floods in the biggest river in the Kathmandu Valley.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division recorded 87.00 mm rainfall in 24 hours till 8:45 this morning.

Police said 200 shanties were inundated after the Bagmati River gushed into slum area at Bansighat of Kuleshwar in Kathmandu.  Likewise, 100 shanties were affected at Balkhu and eight at Sundarighat, Kirtipur.

As many as 51 people from Bansighat, 49 from Sundarighat and several others from Balkhu were rescued and moved to a safe location, police said.

Meanwhile, around 16 shanties and a concrete house at Singatigaun, and a private school -- Nawa Bhawani Academy -- at Mahalaxmisthan of Lalitpur were waterlogged, according to the Lalitpur District Police.

The floods in Hanumante Khola affected hundreds of houses, local schools and Siddhismriti Hospital. Several houses are seen submerged in water for five feet.

The local river inflicted damage on a warehouse and a paper factory also.

Likewise, the Bhaktapur Industrial Estate in Byasi has been inundated.

A landslide at Muhanpokhari, Telkot has affected the two-way traffic in the Bhaktapur-Nagarkot road, according to police.
