Janai Purnima being observed across the country

KATHMANDU: Janai Purnima also known as sacred thread festival is being observed across the nation on Saturday.

On the occasion, especially Hindu Brahmins and Chhetris who have undergone Bratabandha (hair shaving ceremony) change the sacred thread janai (white cotton string worn across the chest) and also tie sacred thread around the wrist of the right hand.

People believe that the use of the sacred thread will bring them good luck. It is also believed that this thread should be removed only on the day of Laxmi Puja that falls during Dipawali.

Big fairs will be held at Kumbheshwor in Lalitpur and Gosaikunda in Rasuwa district on this day.

Janai Purnima is also popularly known as Rakshya Bandan.

Rakshya Bandan is primarily observed in India and in Tarai districts of Nepal. Lately, the festival is celebrated throughout the nation.

On this day, Sisters offer the rakhi (a symbol of protection) to their brothers. There is a belief that Rakshya Bandan will bring security to their brothers.

People celebrate the festival eating Kwati (soup cooked from germinated pulses) and other special food items.
