‘Jobs for dental hygienists scarce’

Kathmandu, August 25

Nepal Dental Science Association today urged aspiring students to think twice before commencing certificate level in dental science, saying there were limited job opportunities in the sector.

Dom Bahadur Katuwal, vice-president, NDSA, said, “Students aspiring to study dental science should thoroughly study the market for job opportunities.” He claimed that he had also been a victim of joblessness after competing his studies.

“Along with unemployment, students of dental science are facing problems pursuing higher education,” he said.

The subject was introduced by Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training in 2005 and eight colleges have been running the course.

Katuwal said it costs round Rs one million to Rs 1.2 million to pursue higher education in dental science while a dental hygienist is paid only Rs 6,000 salary.

He also accused CTEVT of not monitoring dental colleges. “CTEVT has only been granting affiliation to colleges but has not been monitoring their quality,” he said.
