KIST hospital tense after patient’s death

Kathmandu, Sept 24

Tension ran high in KIST Medical College and Teaching Hospital today following the death of a patient after kidney stone surgery.

Irate relatives of the deceased patient staged demonstrations outside the hospital and accused the doctors involved in her treatment of negligence.

Lalita Kumari Chaudhary, 23, of Saptari had undergone kidney stone surgery at the hospital on August 7.

“Chaudhary’s kidney stone was removed with minimally invasive Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy technique. When we operated her and took her to the post-operation observation ward she started shivering and had fever. We then shifted her to the intensive care unit. She had urosepsis — a severe infection.  She also had acute respiratory distress syndrome. To control the spread of bacteria and prevent infection her right kidney was removed, but her left kidney too stopped working because of the toxins. She died of multiple organ failure,” said Dr Kaushal Karki, urologist at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the deceased woman’s kin have accused the hospital and the doctor of negligence and have demanded compensation of 12 lakhs.

“We won’t accept the body until investigation is carried out into the patient’s death,” said Ram Swagat Chaudhary the deceased’s brother.
