Upon return, Oli adamant on Constitution amendment

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli on Monday said his party would not be ready to amend the Constitution unless the government convincingly justified its motive.

Upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu from Bangkok of Thailand today, Oli said the CPN-UML would not agree to amend the Constitution under pressure of any external force.

"Though Constitution is a dynamic document and can be amended as per needs of the time," he said, "Why do we need it now?"

He said the Constitution amendment should not be against democracy and national interests, adding the statute could not be amended just to fulfill vested interests of some political groups.

The main opposition leader at the Parliament was of the view that both the government and the agitating parties did not have any concrete logic behind their argument for the Constitution amendment.

Oli on August 25 had left for Bangkok on a medical trip.
