Maoist Centre in mood to topple govt if Oli 'doesn't correct'

KATHMANDU: The ruling coalition partner CPN Maoist Centre seems in a mood to topple the incumbent government led by CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli if the latter 'would not correct himself' toward implementing a nine-point agreement signed between the two parties.

According to a senior member of the party's headquarters, leaders speaking at the headquarters meeting today expressed strong discontents over the government performance so far toward implementing the May 5 agreement.

"The government largely ignored the agreement," Mani Thapa told THT Online after the meeting, "It did not pay any attention to the deal even after we reminded the government for its implementation."

"Now, there is a question before us. We are in a moral dilemma (about giving continuity to the incumbent government)."

Thapa, however, maintained that the meeting did not take any formal decision about fate of the government.

"But, we discussed what to do next," he said, adding the party would remind PM Oli again to prioritise implementation of the agreement, in which the two major political forces of the nation had agreed to give continuity to the incumbent government provided it dealt with pending issues of the peace process and transitional justice in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Accord.

"For us, the issues are more important than the government. But, the government did not consider implementation of the Constitution and national consensus," Thapa said.

Meanwhile, the Maoist leaders also expressed their concerns over implementation of a "gentlemen's agreement" reportedly signed between Oli and the then UCPN-Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal in order to handover the government reigns to the Maoist party, according to Thapa.

"They [the UML leaders] are saying that the gentlemen's agreement was never sealed," he said, adding the Maoist leaders have taken it as a clear indication of motive to breach the agreement.

"We concluded that the distance between us and the government has definitely widened," Thapa hinted, "Now, we may go for forming alliance with any force which may support our issues."

The leader, however, maintained that the current government could be saved if Oli realised the failure to implement the pact and corrected that.

"We will remind him about it," he shared.

According to party spokesperson Pampha Bhusal, party Chairman Dahal has been entrusted with responsibilities to take initiatives for a national consensus government.

Meanwhile, the party has called the politburo meeting for July 5, according to Chairman Dahal's website.

The website informed that the meeting today endorsed the party's organisational and election guidelines.
