Meeting of EPG on Nepal-India Relations concludes

KATHMANDU: Finalising its agendas, the maiden meeting of Eminent Persons' Group on Nepal-India Relations (EPG-NIR) concluded here in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

The agendas have been divided into five categories -- political issues, government to government relation, social and cultural relation, economic exchange and developmental cooperation.

The Governments of Nepal and India have assigned the EPG, which comprises of four members each from both the countries, to prepare a joint report with recommendations on how to improve bilateral relations between Nepal and India in the changed context.

The report would be pragmatical, implementable and contextual for both the countries, according to EPG Coordinator from Nepal Bhekh Bahadur Thapa.

The EPG has been given two years to come up with the comprehensive report on anything that needs to be updated, adjusted or amended in all exiting bilateral treaties, agreements, understandings, including the Peace and Friendship Treaty of 1950.

The EPG would hold its next meeting within three months for further discussion in the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Nepal's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa had inaugurated the opening session the two-day meeting.

Formation of EPG was decided upon Nepal's proposal during the third Nepal-India Joint Commission meeting in July 2014. The body, however, got its final shape only after both the countries announced names of EPG members during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s India visit in February.
