MoE to regulate education consultancies

Kathmandu, August 30

Minister for Industry Mahesh Basnet on Sunday expressed happiness at the registration of educational consultancies with the Ministry of Education (MoE).

Extending greetings on the occasion of 19th anniversary of Educational Consultancy Association of Nepal (ECAN) in the capital, Basnet said educational consultancies earlier registered with the Office of Company Registrar and now the MoE is their new guardian.

“After registration of educational consultancies with MoE, malpractices and misguidance to students aspiring to study abroad will be checked.”

A few weeks ago, police had raided more than three dozen educational consultancies and arrested their proprietors for operating without registration and misguiding students.

Earlier, the MoE had asked all educational consultancies to register themselves with MoE but only 41 educational consultancies had registered in the first phase last year and 133 consultancies in the second phase this year .

Speaking at the programme, SSP Sarbendra Khanal at the Metropolitan Police Crime Division vowed to correct anomalies in the sector. “Scrupulous consultancies need not fear police investigation,” he said.

Rajendra Baral, president, ECAN urged the police not to harass scrupulous consultancies.
