Moot court contest to be organised

Kathmandu, March 15

Students of Kathmandu-based law schools and students of Howard University School of Law, USA, will be participating in a US-Nepal International Moot Court Competition to be held here on March 17 and 18.

The programme is being organised with the support of Fulbright Alumni Association of Nepal and Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy. According to organisers, the programme aims to foster student-to-student interaction between Nepal and the US on emerging trends in international law.

A moot court competition is a mock court at which law students argue imaginary cases. Participants take part in simulated court proceedings, like drafting memorials or memoranda and participating in oral argument in the moot court.

Speaking at the programme, Supreme Court Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla said law professionals should not only point out problems, but also look at the cause of problems and their impact. She also said that fear of ‘contempt of court’ should not limit ‘freedom of expression.’

US Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B Teplitz said, “Shaping judiciary for accountable governing system is important as Nepal has come into the crossroad with the new constitution, new government, new opportunities and new challenges.”

Students of Nepal Law Campus, National Law College, Kathmandu School of Law, Kathmandu University School of Law and Chakrabarti Habi Education Academy College of Law will participate in the competition. Each team is comprised of four students and a coach.
