NAMS renamed as Manmohan National Academy of Medical Sciences

KATHMANDU: The National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) on Saturday decided to rename itself as the Manmohan National Academy of Medical Sciences.

The decision follows a four-point agreement signed with Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital's orthopaedic surgeon Govinda KC in July.

A NAMS Senate meeting made a decision to rename the institution.

Minister for Health Gagan Thapa, ex-officio co-chancellor of NAMS, had called an emergency meeting of the Senate today in a bid to stop Dr KC from staging another round of protest from coming Monday.

Dr KC, who has already staged eight fast-unto-deaths over past few years demanding various reforms in Nepal's medication sector, had warned of staging the ninth hunger strike from Monday if the agreement signed with him was not implemented.

According to the Senate decision today, the renamed NAMS would acquire all property of the proposed Manmohan College of Health Sciences.

Meanwhile, the Parliament would hold discussions on the Nepal Medical Education Bill on Sunday, according to Thapa.
