The National Vigilance Centre has directed elected local representatives to submit their property details within 60 days of their election through the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development.

Accordingly, newly elected local representatives have started furnishing details of property in their or family members’ name, said Parshu Ram Pokharel, chief of property details collection section at the centre.

Local representatives who have been told to submit their property details include mayor and deputy mayor of metropolises, sub-metropolises and municipalities, and chiefs of rural municipalities.

Spokesperson for the ministry Rudra Singh Tamang said property details of elected local representatives, where the first and second phase of local level elections have concluded recently, were being collected.

Clause 5 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059 requires public post holders to submit property details along with sources or evidence thereof within 60 days of assuming office or thereafter within 60 days of the completion of each fiscal.

In case of a failure to do so within the given time, one will be liable to a fine of Rs 5,000 each or the concerned body or official may launch investigation into the property in the person’s or family member’s name.

Earlier, the ministry had directed all its units to slap a fine of Rs 5,000 each on local level employees failing to submit property details.
