Police detain Bhattarai among dozens from demo outside EC

KATHMANDU: Police have detained Naya Shakti Party Nepal Coordinator Baburam Bhattarai among other leaders of fringe parties while they were staging a protest in front of the Election Commission Office at Kantipath on Sunday.

Other arrestees include Parashu Ram Tamang and Hisila Yami of the NSPN and CP Gajurel of Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Revolutionary Maoist.

The leaders at first were taken to a police battalion in Maharajgunj before being taken to the Bhrikutimandap-based Nepal Police Club.

The parties have been protesting the legal provision of granting own election symbols to parties represented in the Parliament only for the upcoming local level elections.

Meanwhile, speaking with media after police detained him, Bhattarai said the protests would continue till the Local Level Elections Act was amended so as to let the parties enjoy the right to use own election symbols.

He argued that the provision of sentiments and values of the multiparty democratic system.
